I'm sure you've all heard about the earthquake in Northern Japan. I am really at a loss of words. My heart and deepest prayers goes out to all the people affected, and my deepest gratitude to everyone who are working day and night to rescue people, to restore power...

Japan is still facing a lot of troubles, but I believe that we have to keep our chins up and keep on moving forward.

Please please keep Japan in your thoughts and support Japan in any way you can.

Kazuo Ohno

I know I'm a bit late, posting about haute couture when the next fashion week is around the corner, but please bear with me as I get used to the fast-paced blogging world!

Anyways, I'm sure you've seen how beautiful and intricate the dresses were at Givenchy so I won't go into that. What I do want to share is the dancer that inspired this collection, Kazuo Ohno. A person I knew was involved with planning Kazuo Ohno's performances and I had this DVD of his works I hadn't watched, so I thought this would be a perfect time to do so.

Kazuo Ohno was a legendary figure in a form of dance called butoh, which is recognized as a mix of Japanese tradition and avant-gardism. It is inspired by both Japanese and foreign literature, explores taboo topics, and involves playful and grotesque imagery.

This was my first time watching Kazuo Ohno's works, and though I'm far from being able to understand each dance, each action, I was taken at how expressive his hands were. They were captivating--it makes you feel amazed that so much can be conveyed with just the hands.

I think Kazuo Ohno's words sum up my feelings best: "It is not important to understand what I am doing; perhaps it is better if they don't understand, but just respond to the dance".

飛躍の年。

It has been quite a while since I sat down at my computer to write a post. After a four-month hiatus, I'm happy to be back! It might take a bit, but hopefully I can establish a good blogging pace again. Also, is there anything you want to see on this blog? I would love to know what kind of things you'd be interested in, so please feel free to comment/e-mail any suggestions, questions, etc.

I wore my blazer out today for the first time, signing that fall is finally approaching Tokyo after an incredibly hot summer.

東京ではやっと気温が下がり、私は今期初めて、ブレザーを下ろしました。ようやく秋が訪れそうですね。

It's almost October I know, but summer brought some great experiences and memories (an internship, hearing Yohji Yamamoto speak in person (!), meeting totally unexpected and incredible people...) so I'm a little sad that the seasons are really starting to change.

もう１０月だけど、夏の終わりはやっぱり寂しい。特に今年の夏は充実していたからこそ、そう思うのかな。

I've been unable to post regularly for quite a while now and I'm afraid this will continue through the rest of the year. I was just looking at my favorite blogs and realized how much I miss blogging and how there's lots of things I want to post and share. But right now there is so much on plate, so many things I have to do before blogging. So this is a temporary farewell from blogging, until I get through what would probably be one roller coaster of a ride of the last three months of 2010. Hopefully I'll be able to look at your blogs every once in a while, but till then, see you guys in 2011!

I stumbled upon these two lovely cafes a while ago, on the same day. It totally made my day: good food, lovely owners, and a cozy atmosphere.

久しぶりにカフェを紹介します。たまたま見つけた、三軒茶屋のほっこりカフェ。偶然にこういうところを見つけると幸せな気分になりますよね。

The first is called LUPOPO. In the small but cozy space, a corner is for displaying and selling handmade goods like jewelry and bags.

一つ目はLUPOPO。小さな店内に、カフェスペースと手作りのアクセサリーなどが売っています。

There was this notebook where customers left messages. It was filled with lovely illustrations...
お客様書き込み用のノート。人の字を見るのって、面白い。こんな字書けたらなー、とかあの字も素敵だな、と。

The next store, from Earth Cafe "OHANA", was an organic cafe with a great variety of teas. Surprisingly I'm finding a lot of organic cafes around Tokyo.
次はfrom Earth Cafe "OHANA"というオーガニック系のカフェ。東京って意外とオーガニックのお店が多いんですね。

These pound cakes were so good but also tasted healthy. I love how even the little dishes like the forks matches the store perfectly.

美味しく、かつヘルシーなパウンドケーキ。とてもあたたかい雰囲気のお店でした。

When I stopped by a store called Loft a couple months ago, there was an art event going on called Pop Box. It's an annual event where each artist has a small box (=booth) to display his/her artworks inside the store. I was especially captivated by one of the boxes...

毎年ロフトで開催されているアートのイベント、ポップボックス。たまたま寄ったときに開催されていて、思わず立ち止まったボックス。

The artist's name is Yoko Sueyoshi. I am in love with the world she creates and am enchanted by the boys and girls that appear inside her artwork. The children in these pictures aren't just innocent; I feel like there's a lot hidden inside their expressions. Wouldn't you love to slip into this world? The scenery is breathtaking.

彼女の名前は末吉陽子さん。末吉さんの世界観がすごく好きで、こんなところに住んでみたいと思った。純粋だけどどこか不思議な表情をしている男の子と女の子たち。お話してみたくなります。

I had the chance to see her at a live painting and it was incredible to see her works come to life. She was a lovely person, just like her artwork.

ライブペイントを見る機会があったんですが、とにかく見とれてしまいました。終わったあとには葉書にサインをしてくださって、とても素敵な方でした！

Hussein Chalayan from fashion and back

I finally made it to the Hussein Chalayan exhibit! I wrote about the exhibit before it started and it was too bad I couldn't go earlier.

やっと行ってきました。東京都現代美術館で開催されているフセイン・チャラヤン展。いち早くここで紹介していたのですが、見に行くのが終了間際になってしまって残念。

In an interview, Chalayan has stated that he's more like a fashion artist than a fashion designer and I think this exhibit displayed that well. It is definitely not just a retrospective of his past collections, but an installation of his artwork. I was especially surprised by the amount of films on display. Chalayan incorporates so many ideas and topics in his work, and I found it quite difficult to wrap my head around the underlying meaning of his films. Another reason to go to an exhibit as soon as it starts--so that there's time to go again. I wish I could go re-watch the films and try to deepen my understanding. They were very interesting and thought-provoking to say the least.

My favorites were "After Words" (Autumn/Winter 2000) and "Absent Presence" (short film, 2005). I definitely recommend watching the video for "After Words". Chalayan was "inspired by the plight of the refugee and the horror of having to leave one's home suddenly in times of war". I won't go into details here but watching the furniture transformed into clothing and ultimately leaving the room still and lifeless was an extremely powerful image.

Tilda Swinton plays a biologist in "Absent Presence", which "explores the neurosis and paranoia surrounding the issue of terrorism, inspired by the introduction of 'hard line' policies on immigration and the resulting suspicion surrounding foreign individuals". I felt that this was easier to understand than the other films and watching different scenes on five screens at once created an amazing effect. This is an extremely relevant topic to our society today and it makes you wonder if this is the kind of future that awaits us.

自分はファッションデザイナーというより、ファッションアーティストであるとインタビューで語ったチャラヤン。まさにそれを上手く捉えた展示だったな、という印象です。過去のコレクションのアーカイブ、というよりアートインスタレーションって感じですかね。映像作品が多くてびっくりしました。チャラヤンの作品は歴史や科学など、本当に幅広い分野を取り入れて、どの作品も何回でも見たいと思うものばかりでした。見る度に必ず新しい発見がありそうな気がする。

個人的に好きだったのが「アフター・ワーズ」（秋/冬2000）と「不在の存在」（短編映画）。「アフター・ワーズ」は難民の苦境から着想を得たコレクションで、部屋の中の家具が洋服へと変化するところが印象的。最終的に部屋には何もなく、空虚さだけが残る。空っぽになった部屋は静かに、でも強く訴える、パワフルなイメージ。

「不在の存在」は女優のティルダ・スウィントンが出演していましたね。日本も変化していくなか、これからはどういう社会になるのか。この短編映画みたいな日がいつか訪れるのか。色々考えさせられました。

I felt that Chalayan is depicting conflicts and themes that are actually connected strongly to our lives. I could only be amazed at Chalayan's ability to show those conflicts and themes through fashion.

私達の生活や人生にも関っている問題やテーマをファッションで表現しているのかな。複雑な感情、トピックをファッションで表すチャラヤンの作品から衝撃、刺激を受けるばかりでした。

The official book is very nice--it goes through all of the installations and includes an interview between Chalayan and Yuko Hasegawa (the chief curator of MOT), both in Japanese and English. What I found incredibly disappointing though, was that the English version of the interview was written terribly. The grammar was incorrect and the style was unpleasing. It did not flow at all and I couldn't get through the whole interview.
In Japan, English is used incorrectly in a lot of places and I'm always shocked that it doesn't get corrected before being published/opened to the public. The exhibition was really wonderful and as I said, the book itself is lovely, but it totally let me down to see these errors. Maybe this is unimportant to most people, but I appreciate it when you can see and feel that a work has been executed impeccably, when you know that something has been looked over countless times to ensure perfection. I think it's normal to expect that kind of quality from a book that is widely published. Has anyone purchased this book/read the interview? I'd love to hear opinions.

この展示のオフィシャル本は、インスタレーションの説明と、チャラヤンとMOTのチーフキュレーターの長谷川祐子さんとの対談が日本語と英語で収録されています。写真もよし、サイズもよし、と全体的にはよいのですが対談の英語訳がとてもよい英語とは言えず、非常に残念でした。読み始めた瞬間から違和感を感じました。文法的に間違っている箇所が多く、文章がスムーズに流れてない印象を受けました。

せっかくいい展示、いい本なのにこのようなミスがあると本当に残念に思います。公式に出版、公開されるものでも英語ミスが多いでよね。文章に限らず、作ったものは何回も何回も見直し、完璧なものを目指す努力や熱意は大切だと思います。特に、出版され、多くの人に読まれるものは、これくらいのクオリティが当たり前なのでは。購入された方、対談を読まれた方、ぜひ意見を聞かせてください！

Mixed Matched Media ✕ Tokyo Identity

One of the things I wish I was good at is art. Going to a museum is one of my favorite things to do and I think art history is fascinating, but I just can't put my thoughts and inspirations in a drawing or painting.

So I was really excited when the talented CC Wai of Mixed Matched Media offered to translate my concept and ideas into a drawing for my blog! If you haven't seen her blog, definitely go have a look. The Vivienne Westwood and Miu Miu are some of my favorites, I love how she captures each collection perfectly but still adds a touch of her own uniqueness.

美術館に行ったり、美術について学んだり、アートに触れるのは大好きだけど、どうしても自分では何も作り出せない。デッサンとか、粘土とか、最強に苦手です。

そんな私と正反対なCC Waiさんが私のコンセプトを元に絵を書いてくださる、と言ってくれました！CC Waiさんのブログはいつも素敵な絵や写真でいっぱい。特に好きなのは、コレクションからインスパイアされた絵。そのブランドの個性を再現しつつ、CC Waiさんの独特の絵に仕上がっています。

It was hard for me to think of an idea, but I definitely knew I wanted the drawing to be set in Tokyo and for the girl to have a bob. This is a photo I sent to her for reference. I love how time seems to be passing slowly on this street, despite it being right in Tokyo. CC Wai suggested that she refer to some of my past posts for inspiration, and to my surprise, she drew two of my favorite pieces from the mintdesigns and matohu collection!

とりあえず描いて頂く絵は東京の設定、そして絵の中の女の子はボブがいいと思いました。でも久しぶりに絵のアイディアを考えようとすると、意外と難しい...CC Waiさんの提案で私が東京で好きな場所の写真を送ることに。写真は書いてある通り、夕方のキャットストリート。なんだかここに行くと落ち着き、そして色々な意味で思い出深い場所です。

絵の中の女の子は私がブログに載せたものを参考にするとのこと。mintdesignsとmatohuが好きと伝えたのですが、なんと私のお気に入りのルックを描いてくださって、本当に嬉しい！

Isn't it gorgeous? I think she captured the atmosphere of the street perfectly, and the vibrant colors are so beautiful. & I can't get over how stylish the threesome look. I love that all three of the girls have bobs, but how the color and styling fits their personality and outfit. Really cool to see my ideas, combined with CC Wai's, come to life.

Ghibli Museum in Mitaka

A couple of months ago I went to Ghibli Museum for the first time. I've been meaning to go for the longest time and I finally did. I grew up watching Ghibli films and my friends and I still get totally excited whenever a new film comes out.

ずっと行こうと思っていたジブリ美術館。数ヶ月前やっと行ってきました！

As you can see, the museum is nestled away in the nature, helping create the Ghibli world...

自然の中にそっと潜む、隠れ家みたいな美術館。ジブリの雰囲気にぴったりです。

Photographs aren't allowed inside the museum (and it is so much better to see everything in person, you'll feel like you're in a Ghibli film) so I'm going to show some other parts...

...まずはカフェ！

The left is called omu-rice, basically, an omelette with rice inside. The right, a strawberry shortcake. Both very good, not to mention absolutely adorable! All of the food came with a little flag on top and the plates had Ghibli characters on them too. A fun fact: the omu-rice is shaped like a straw hat, like the one Mei wears in Totoro.

麦わらぼうしのオムライスとふぞろいイチゴのショートケーキ。ジブリの映画の中にでできそうな可愛さ。気付きましたか？オムライスがちゃんと麦わらぼうしになっているんです。麦わらぼうしはめいちゃんがかぶってましたね。

ロボット兵はここの守り神。一番最初の写真にひっそりと佇んでいるロボット兵に気付きましたでしょうか。

For more information about exhibits and the museum itself, go here. I saw the Ponyo exhibition when I went and it was really interesting to see Hayao Miyazaki's actual sketches. There is also a small, very cute movie theater playing a short film that you can see only at the museum. And just a warning, don't forget to reserve your tickets in advance, they can't be purchased at the museum.

Do you have a favorite Ghibli film? I'd love to know. Mine are Spirited Away and Whisper of the Heart.

I think everyone would love to own something from the Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2010 RTW Collection. But since Miu Miu costs waaay more than I can afford right now, I was thrilled to find this at Zara. I knew Zara had the cat print one but the swallows were my favorite, so this was a great find.

I think I'm going to try the DIY collar like the one Jessica posted here. After reading Hiroko's entry about her Miu Miu collar though, is making me want the actual Miu Miu collar! The shoes and the clothes are completely out of reach but the collars seem a tiny bit more accessible...if I save up for it. Either ways I'm planning to stop by the Miu Miu store in Shibuya just to admire the collection and the lovely store.

春/夏2010のコレクションが大人気のミウミウ。女の子だったら誰でも欲しくなるような可愛い柄の洋服や靴がいっぱいのコレクションですね。ミウミウにはなかなか手が届かないから、やっぱりこういう時はファストファッションに感謝...このそっくりなワンピースはZaraで見つけました。つばめの柄が一番好きで、珍しくサイズもぴったりだったのでラッキー。

多くのブロガーがコレクションでも登場した襟を作ってるらしく、私も挑戦してみるつもり。でもHirokoさんのブログを見てやっぱりミウミウの襟に惹かれています。服や靴は雲の上の存在だけど、頑張ればなんとか襟には手が届きそう...とりあえずお店で実物を見てみたいな。

UJ billboards were everywhere when they launched. Did you have a chance to see them? Uniqlo ads are so chic now, Tao Okamoto looked so amazing in the UJ campaign. I used to not like Uniqlo jeans because the seam would hit right on my hip bones and it hurt a lot. But imagine my surprise when I went to the store and saw this:

UJが発売された頃は町中がUJの広告だらけでしたね。ユニクロのジーンズは縫い目がちょうど骨にあたるからあまり好きじゃなかったけど、広告のTAOさんがかっこよすぎて、思わず見に行きました。

First of all, wow, the variety. They had chemical wash, colored jeans, everything. I couldn't help trying on a pair and surprisingly, the jeans didn't hurt. The material was really soft and light than the previous jeans and I ended up buying a pair of chemical wash jeans.

まず、この種類の豊富さ！ケミカルワッシュやカラードジーンズ、ベーシックのものから流行りのものまで一通りあります。そして試着してみたら以前より柔らかく、軽くなっていてびっくり。質がいい上に安いので、ケミカルワッシュのを衝動買い。

This is from the UJ catalog. From left, the different shades they have and the different styles. On top of this UJ has a monthly collection, which means new styles are released every month. I remember I sort of wanted J Brand jeans a while ago but now I'd prefer having more styles (inexpensive ones!) than one super expensive pair. What about you guys?

I'm always looking for a new cafe to add to my list of favorites. Recently I went to BiOcafe at Spain-Zaka (a famous street that translates as Spain Hill) in Shibuya.

渋谷中心に常に新しいカフェやレストランを探しているんですが、渋谷って意外とカフェ発掘が難しい気がして...そんななかで最近一番気に入ったスペイン坂のBiOcafeを紹介。実は同じくスペイン坂にあるカフェ/バー人間関係プロデュースのお店。人間関係はよく行くけど、この間初めてBiOcafeに行ってみました。

BiOcafe, as you can probably guess from the name, is a cafe with food that you actually feel good eating. Their food is filled with organic vegetables, soy milk, cereal plant and all the healthy things that include minerals and nutrients that we don't get enough of these days.

Biocafeは“食べてキレイになるカフェレストラン”がコンセプト。どうしても不足してしまうミネラルや栄養素。有機野菜、雑穀、豆乳などでおいしく健康的に食べられるカフェです。

This is what I had when I went to BiOcafe for lunch. I don't remember the exact name, but the tomato soup included beans and little bits of pasta. Topped with fried (but not greasy) fish and the sweetest onion, it was the perfect comfort food. My lunch also came with brown rice, herb tea, and a small desert. The brown rice here is so good, you have to try it!

The store is nice and cozy. I have yet to try but the wild yeast bread is supposed to be really good too.

Though I actually don't regularly listen to Lady Gaga's music, I really admire her aesthetic and how she is truly passionate about fashion. Lady Gaga was in Japan this past weekend for The Monster Ball Tour but also appeared on popular TV show Music Station and also performed at a secret show hosted by M·A·C.

I can't find any photos of her at Music Station and the videos on You Tube have been deleted already...but for both Music Station and the secret show, she wore a lot (if not most) of pieces from Japanese designers. I love that she wore Japanese designers because I don't feel like many Japanese musicians/actors/etc. support young, independent designers.

実はあまりレディ・ガガの音楽は聞かないんですが、彼女の性格やファッションに対する気持ちなどとても素敵だと思います。ツアーの他にミュージックステーションの出演やM·A·C主催のシークレットライブもありましたね。

いつも話題を呼ぶレディ・ガガの服装ですが、ミュージックステーションでもシークレットライブでも日本のブランドを着てました！地元、若手のアーティストをサポートする姿勢もレディ・ガガが好きな理由の一つ。日本のアーティストや芸能人がこういう形でサポートするのは本当に少なくて残念...

Lady Gaga wore a lace bodysuit from SOMARTA's (briefly mentioned here) 2nd Skin Series for both Music Station and the secret show.

At Music Station, she wore a black version that was sparkly and less see-through than this one. According to GagaDaily.com, the body suit is decorated with 20 thousand Swarovski crystal beads and takes 5 months to complete!

ミュージックステーションはこの写真のボディースーツにスワロフスキーのクリスタルビーズがついている感じでした。GagaDaily.comによると、ビーズの数はなんと２万個で、作るのに５ヶ月かかるそうです！

I've been looking for a hat for quite a while and a couple months ago, I finally bought my first CA4LA hat!

ずっと欲しかった帽子。最近念願の初CA4LAを買いました！

The fabric is light which makes it a great hat for spring and of course I couldn't resist the black sequined bow. This hat is surprisingly wearable and goes well with a lot of my clothes. I think I want to start a hat/headband/headpiece collection now.

麻の帽子なのでこれからの季節にぴったり。帽子自体の色は薄いベージュだけど、リボンが黒いから意外とあわせやすくて、これからいっぱいかぶる予定です。

CA4LA is a Japanese hat store that produces their own designs. As you can see from this photo, the store interior has a vintage feel with darker lighting and chandeliers. CA4LA has really unique designs, and they also have really cute headbands/hair accessories. I spend a lot of time at CA4LA even when I'm only window shopping, because it's so fun to try on different styles!

オリジナルのデザインの帽子やヘッドピースが人気のCA4LA。店内の照明やヴィンテージ風のインテリアも素敵です。CA4LAに行くたび、ついつい端から端までかぶってみちゃうのであっという間に時間が過ぎてしまいます。ちなみに、次に目をつけているのはちょっと派手めのヘッドバンド！髪が短いからヘッドピースなどに挑戦したいな。

There are 8 stores within Tokyo and more around the country, and there's even one in London. I'd definitely recommend going to the store even if you're just looking, I just love the atmosphere.

Every year from 1999, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo has had an annual exhibition featuring young artists' work on a theme that relates to the world and society we live in today. This year's theme is "Neo-Ornamentalism", reflecting on the meaning of decoration and ornamentation. According to the official site, ornamentation "are not simply expressions of what people held to be beautiful in different ages: they embody a particular world view that questions the nature of time, space, and even individual human existence". I think decorating is something that can be found a lot in Japan, there are tons of girls who put crystals everywhere from their nails to their cell phones, for example.

東京都現代美術館は1999年から毎年、“時代と結びついたテーマによる同時代の若手アーティストを紹介する展覧会MOTアニュアル”を開催。今年のテーマは装飾。装飾はその当時の社会や人々の価値観を象徴するものであり、日本独自の“デコる”や“装飾男子”もそのなかの一つでしょう。

Can you believe this is all made of salt? I heard that the artist would come to the museum and work on it a bit each day. It covered the floors of a big room. I would never be patient enough to do this.

The exhibition ends on April 11 so if you have time I strongly recommend you go! The photos do not do the beautiful artworks justice.

Also the Hussein Chalayan exhibit (the poster on the very right) has already started so you could catch both exhibits at once! I haven't been to the Hussein Chalayan exhibit yet but I'm so excited to go.

So this concludes my JFW posts...Though I couldn't post these during the actual fashion week, I wanted to show some of my favorites on this blog.

Hopefully you enjoyed reading these and seeing all the amazing collections. Writing about JFW enabled me to look more closely at Japanese fashion, which I'd never really done before.

Japan is famous for its streetstyle, but not many bloggers post about fashion weeks and/or collections. I thought it would be a nice change to introduce another aspect of Japanese fashion. Thanks for all the lovely comments and as always, I'd love to hear your opinions and thoughts!

fur fur does volume-y lace-y dresses the best. The boyish sneakers or simple flats balance them out and makes them wearable. According to Fashion Snap, there was a live violin performance for the BGM. I imagine that fur fur would be a really fun show to go see.
fur furのボリュームたっぷりでフェミニンなドレスをVANSやシンプルなバレエフラットとあわせているのが絶妙。ショーではバイオリンの生演奏があったらしく、fur furのショーは生て見ると面白そう！という印象を受けました。

TROVE

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I saw a lot of monochromatic styles for men so it was refreshing to see warm brown tones and knits. The fallen leaves add a great effect too!
メンズはモノクロが多いような気がしたのでこういう暖かい茶系のニットのスタイルが新鮮でした。レイヤードのコーディネートなど、女子でも真似できそうですね。

tiny dinosaur

tiny dinosaur had a variety of looks, from simple, to prints inspired by foam/bubbles, and unique shoes. I especially want to take a closer look at the two women's shoes here!

装苑のショッピングサイトでここのスカートを見つけてから、ずっと気になっていたtiny dinosaur。今回はシンプルなものから色鮮やかなもの、泡のプリント、個性的な靴など、とても見応えがありました。特にこの二つの女性用の靴が気になる...！

The theme of this collection was to cut out a piece of daily life. Mixing sharp jackets, blazers, and shirts with baggy sports inspired pants and shorts, this was a very wearable, simple but chic collection.
このショーのテーマは「きりとる」。日常の些細な風景を“スクエア”に落とし込んだとのこと。シャープなジャケット、ブレザー、トップスなどをスポティーでだぼっとしたボトムスが絶妙なミックス。シンプルでかっこよく、今すぐ着たくなるようなルックたち。

To me, the fictional girl this brand creates is kind of the person one would want to talk to and get to know. This season designers Steve Hall and Yurika Ohara were inspired by Grimm fairy tale Rapunzel. The tighter side braids gives a totally different feel than the loose braids seen at Alexander Wang and the way the braids were incorporated into prints and scarves were unique.
IN-PROCESS BY HALL OHARAが生み出す女の子がすごく好きです。前回のコレクションを見ても感じたけど、この架空の女の子と話してみたい、会ってみたいと思っちゃいます。今回はグリム童話ラプンツェルを元とした「LONG HAIR PRINCESS (髪長姫)」がテーマ。IN-PROCESS BY HALL OHARAが描くお姫様は少しお転婆なのかな？来シーズンも楽しみ。

With the title of the show being "The Japanese Eye Part 1", this was a show that valued traditional Japanese aesthetics. I love the way they put color together and the bright wigs work really well with the styling.

タイトルが「日本の眼〜第一章〜」とあるだけに、日本の文化や美意識を取り入れたmatohu。優しい色合いや心地よさそうな生地、そしてパッと目をひくヘアスタイル。

DISCOVERED

Designers Tatsuya Kimura and Sanae Yoshida said, "We really like the concept of 'contrast', so this time we had the beautiful models wear extremely tough and hard core clothes". This collection was different from the last collection when they used soft fabrics and pearls. There were a lot of looks I liked, and the blue boots are gorgeous!

デザイナーの木村多津也氏と吉田早苗氏が“対比というコンセプトが好きなので、今回は美しいモデルに思いきりハードなウェアを着せた（Fashion Snapより）”と語っていたように、前回のコレクションの女性的な柔らかさは減りましたね。鮮やかなブルーのブーツが目を惹きました。

SHIDA TATSUYA

Shida Tatsuya is one of the designers picked at the first SHINMAI Creator's Project. The clothes naturally fall on the body and they look comfortable but intricate. It's nice change seeing the models barefoot for a change too. Ai Tominaga, who looks absolutely amazing, closed the show.

信太達哉氏は第１回SHINMAI Creator's Projectに選出されたデザイナーのひとり。自然と身体にフィットしていて、とても着心地が良さそう。最近はもはや芸術作品といっても過言ではない美しい靴が多かったなか、コレクションで裸足というのが新鮮です。ショーのクロージングは富永愛。画面からもオーラが伝わってきます...

mintdesigns

I fell in love with mintdesigns after seeing their last collection, filled with gauzy dresses with lovely prints and whimsical headpieces. The prints and headpieces are equally amazing this season, but I like how the geometric headpieces are so different from S/S 2010.

四つ目のルックにも使われている、おなじみの女の子プリントが可愛いmintdesigns。このコレクションのテーマは「A NEW HOPE」。前コレクションの柔らかいヘッドピースとは全く異なる幾何的なヘッドピースが印象的。いつか絶対着てみたいブランドの一つです。

JFW in Tokyo 2010: SHINMAI Creator's Project

SHINMAI Creator's Project, sponsored by JFW, aims to support young designers who aspire to break into the Japanese fashion industry. "Shinmai", which means fresh rice in Japanese, represents the young designers who are fresh and full of possibilities waiting to emerge. This season it was the second SHINMAI Creator's Project and four designers showed their collection during JFW. I'm going to introduce two of my favorites...

JFW特別企画のSHINMAI Creator's Projectは、“日本のファッション市場に参入する足掛かりを与えることを目的”とした、新人デザイナーを発掘するものです。“SHINMAI”とはとれたての旬なお米のこと。“つまり新鮮且つ滋養にあふれた旬の素材を転じて可能性を秘めた若い人材という意味”があり、世界の新進デザイナーの登竜門になることを目標に掲げています。第２回目である今回は、４人のデザイナーがコレクションを発表しました。その中の二つを紹介したいと思います。

A DEGREE FAHRENHEIT/Yu Amatsu

After graduating from Tokyo Mode Gauken, Yu Amatsu moved to New York in 2004 where he worked as a pattern maker for brands like Jen Kao and Marc Jacobs and has won the Gen Art International Design Competition twice. This season, the theme was "Impressionism". I love the new take on the classic trench coat and how it's paired with vibrant red accessories, especially the tights. Not to mention the gorgeous black dresses!

東京モード学園卒業後、2004年に単身ニューヨークへ。全米最大のファッションコンテストで２年連続でグランプリを受賞。Jen KaoやMarc by Marc Jacobsのパタンナーとしても活躍していたそうです！このコレクションは「Impressionnisme」（＝印象主義・写実主義から抽象主義への変化の初期段階を指す）がテーマ。クラシックなトレンチに一工夫加え、赤いアクセサリー（特にタイツ！）とあわせたのが印象的でした。

FABIOLA ARIAS/Fabiola Arias

I don't know much about Fabiola Arias unfortunately, other than that she is a Parsons graduate who made her New York debut in the RTW Spring 2010 season. This season, the theme was "Victorian Fairy Dolls" who live in a forest. I read on Fashion Snap that there was snow falling on the runway! I love the headpieces, wish a close-up photo was available.

NYのパーソンズの卒業生で、2010年の春コレクションでニューヨークデビューをしたそうです。今回のコレクションのテーマは「Victorian Fairy Dolls」（=森の中に住む妖精のようなヴィクトリアン・ドール ‘Fashion Snap’より)。ヘッドピースやドレスの細部がすごく綺麗！ディテールショットが見たい。

high fashion The 50th Anniversary

One of the special events for Japan Fashion Week this season is the exhibit "high fashion The 50th Anniversary" which I briefly mentioned here. It's a small exhibit but I'm really glad I went to see it today. This exhibit explores the 50 years of fashion using photographs and articles from the magazine.

My favorite was the editorials from the 1960s. It was my first time seeing older Japanese editorials and they were gorgeous! It was great seeing beautiful Japanese models with traditional features, something that's rare these days. Also on display was the very first issue of high fashion (which cost $1) and the personal photographs and schedule book of journalist Ikuko Fujii, who reported straight from Paris for the magazine for 33 years.

It's sad that high fashion will stop printing but the good news is that high fashion online will launch on April 1! I still believe that magazines are special, something that will be different from the internet (not better, just different). But I'm happy that the magazine will be continued in some way and can't wait to see what the site looks like!

この記事でもちらっと触れた、「high fashionに見るファッションの50年」が「東京発日本ファッションウィーク」のスペシャルイベントとして開催されています。

チラシにも書いてあったように、本当に50年間のファッションの変遷が感じられて、とても興味深かったです。またhigh fashionが日本のファッション、特に創刊時の60年代においてすごく大きな存在だったのだろうと実感。そして日本のファッション界とずっと一緒に歩んできたんだ、という印象。

この展示はファッションの50年ということで、様々な時代のhigh fashionが見れます。私は古い日本のファッション誌を見たことがなかったので、60年代のエディトリアルが見れて嬉しかったです。他にはhigh fashionの創刊号（お値段360円/$1）や33年間パリに滞在し、パリのモードを取材した藤井郁子氏の写真やスケジュール帳が展示されていました。

high fashionの休刊は残念でさみしいけど、４月１日からハイファッション・オンラインがスタートします！もちろん誌面として復活してほしい気持ちもあるし、雑誌はインターネットと違う良さがあると思うけど、high fashionが何らかの形で続いていくのは嬉しいです。どんなサイトなのか、期待が高まります。

There's a colonnade of cherry blossom trees in my neighborhood and the whole street is dyed pink every spring.

第10回「東京発日本ファッション・ウィーク」2010年秋/冬コレクションが３月２２日に始まります！その前に気になるブランドを紹介したいと思います。

fur fur

This brand is famous for using a lot of different materials and piecing them to create a natural and relaxed silouhette. fur fur aims to find the elegance within deformation through clothes making that comes from the heart.

よく雑誌でも見かけるfur fur。コンセプト“不完全なもの、はかなさ、ゆがみの中にあるエレガントを感情のある服作りを通して表現”とあるように、洋服やショップもあたたかく優しい気がします。

DISCOVERED

I mentioned this brand in this brand in one of the older posts. I don't know too much about DISCOVERED, but I really liked their last collection (which you can view here). The way they used soft fabrics and pearl necklaces gives a new meaning to "genderless".

この記事でもお気に入りとして紹介しました。DISCOVEREDを知ったのは最近だけど、前回のコレクションはすごく時代を反映しているな、と思いました。柔らかそうな生地やパールのネックレスの女性らしさと対照的な力強さが両方があり、新たな“ジェンダーレス”を表している気がします。

This brand I mentioned in a previous post along with DISCOVERED. The beautiful colors and prints and the relaxed sihlouette caught my eye last collection. It's hard to explain but looking at their collection makes me feel happy and warm. Maybe it's because of their lovely concept. I love seeing Japanese tradition in fashion.

このブランドはDISCOVEREDとともに前の記事でちょこっと触れました。色鮮やかで落ち着いた洋服が印象に残っていました。コンセプトを読んで知ったのですが、matohuは「纏う」と「待とう」という意味があるそうです。日本の伝統や文化を取り入れていて、すごく心地よいコレクション。

ODRADEK

Designer Demian Celica Kanou studied at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication and interned at Hussein Chalyan. Feminine details such as lace and flower embellishments were paired with more masculine pieces such as leather jackets and lace-up boots. The combination works well and I can imagine people in Tokyo trying out these looks.

デザイナーの狩野 Demian せりかはイギリスで学び、在英中にフセイン・チャラヤンのインターンも経験したそうです。レースやお花のディーテールと皮のジャケットやブーツの組み合わせが絶妙でした。

After seeing turtlenecks on Preen's runway, I was surprised to see a lot of them pop out on many collections. I personally like turtlenecks, so convenient to have a black one to layer under tank tops and tunics during the winter! However turtlenecks are probably not the most "fashion-forward" thing to wear--up until now, perhaps? As I've written before I'm excited to see if turtlenecks start appearing everywhere this fall.

ファッションウィークも終わり春物の準備をし始めたい今日のこの頃...でもその前に秋/冬コレクションで気になったことを一つ。Preenでタートルネックを見つけたあと、密かにずーっと注目してたんです。そしたらミラノでもパリでも色々なショーでタートルネックが現れて。冬にタンクトップやチュニックとレイアーするときに大活躍なタートルネックは、個人的になくてはならないもの。といっても、特にトレンドになったり目立ってはいなかったのではないでしょうか...。今年の秋にはタートルネックが増えるのかな？どうなるかちょっと楽しみ。

First there was the basic knit turtlenecks and outerwear with a higher neck...

まず最初にベイシックなニットのタートルネックとジャケット。

I love how the basic turtlenecks pull the entire outfit together and gives a sleek but ladylike impression. The gray ones at Haider Ackerman and Givenchy would be great to imitate for a professional look and the warm brown tones at Chloe is gorgeous, perfect for fall. The three coats look incredibly warm, I especially like Miu Miu's girlish and prim feel.

タートルネックにを着るだけで一気に全身がぴしっと、引き締まっていますね。それと同時にすごく女性らしく、エレガントな印象を与えます。クロエの優しい茶系で揃えたルック、挑戦してみたいものです。そしてコートは、なんといってもあったかそう！寒い冬は実用的かつデザイン性の高いアウターが一番。ミウミウの女の子らしいシルウェットがとても可愛らしい。

Other things I noticed were the extra-voluminous turtlenecks and turtlenecks with a contrast between bold and delicate. I think that wearing a huge turtleneck would be a great experimental piece; I know it will definitely inspire me to try out new proportions and overall balance in an outfit. And as you can probably tell from this post, I loved Preen's collection and I love these three pieces. The way the bold turtleneck contrasts with a flowy dress is incredibly beautiful and I'd love to wear one of these looks!

そしてボリューム満点のものや、ボールド/デリケートのコントラストがはっきりしたものが目立ちました。ボリュームのあるものを首にもってくると、いつもと違ったバランスのコーディネートができそう。また、タートルネックで強いラインを出し、スカート・トップスで柔らかさを演出したドレスが印象に残りました。特にPreenのドレスの存在感あるタートルネック、肩に対しドレスの儚く壊れてしまいそうな部分のコントラストが本当に美しい。今シーズンで最も好きなルックの一つです。

Lastly I saw at lot of "decorative" turtlenecks. Missoni layered a necklace-type accessory on top of their bright knits, and Balenciaga used a crisper fabric along with geometric lines to give a futuristic feel. Since lace bodysuits and tights are everywhere, maybe the next thing would be the lace turtlenecks as seen at Valentino?!

最後に一工夫の効いたタートルネック。タートルネックがここまで装飾的になるとはびっくり！ミッソーニはカラフルなニットの上に首輪らしきものをつけたり、バレンシアガはパリっとした生地に幾何的な線で近未来、宇宙っぽさを出してるなーと。最近レースのボディースーツやレギンスをよく見かけますが、その次はもしかして、ヴァレンティーノのルックみたいなレースのタートルネックだったり?!

A Life in Art is a lovely retrospective of artist Francoise Gilot. On display at the Nexus Gallery in CHANEL Ginza, the artworks span her career, including self-portraits and abstract prints. It was nicely lain out with beautiful music, and it's always nice to have a reason to slip into a Chanel store.

久しぶりに銀座へ。シャネルでフランソワーズ・ジローの展示が開催されています。

ピカソの妻だったことでも知られている彼女の絵は、色鮮やかで生命力が溢れている気がします。

Another quick post. I went to the MOT website right now and found out they're having a Hussein Chalayan Exhibit starting on April 3 ending on June 20. I've really enjoyed the recent exhibits at MOT (here's the post on "Luxury in Fashion Reconsidered”) so I'm excited for this one too. The exhibit is said to include representative pieces from his collections that were presented between 1994 to 2009 along with visual images and installations. I'll definitely post a follow up of this exhibit!

フセイン・チャラヤンの展示が４月２日から６月２０日まで東京都現代美術館で開催されるとのこと。この間の“ラグジュアリー：ファッションの欲望”も面白かったので、今回もすごく楽しみ！1994年から2009年の間に発表されたコレクションのなかから代表的なものや映像作品、インスタレーションが紹介されるそう。展示が始まったらまた記事アップする予定です。

Another sad news concerning magazines...it was announced that high fashion will stop printing after the April issue. high fashion has been in print since 1960, and has been a leading fashion magazine in Japan. In the official statement, the publishing company states that in times of difficult situations in the publishing industry, changes in the market, and the diversification of information sources, it has decided to close the magazine. The publishing company is still in consideration about running a part of the magazine on their site.

Their last issue is a 60-page feature on COMME des GARCONS. Also, there will be a special exhibit in March called "high fashion" The 50th anniversary. It will feature the photographs that will show the history of the magazine.

The whole "print media is dying" issue has been around for a while now, with many newspapers and magazines closing down. It's true that nowadays a lot of the information comes from the internet, but it makes me sad whenever I hear about magazines closing down. I like the feeling of excitement of going to a bookstore to buy the latest issue of my favorite magazine, and flipping through the pages of a magazine isn't something that can be substituted by the internet. I unfortunately don't have the money to buy every single fashion magazine out there, but I'll be buying high fashion's last issue with the hope that more magazines will stay in print.

雑誌に関する、また悲しいニュース。４月号をもってハイファッションが休刊となります。ハイファッションは1960年の創刊から日本のモード誌をリードする存在でした。文化出版局からのお知らせでは“厳しい出版状況が続くなか、市場環境の変化や、情報ソースの多様化などにより、一つの区切りとして『ハイファッション』は平成２２年２月２６日発売の４月号をもちまして、休刊させていただくことになりました”と説明しています。雑誌の内容の一部は、サイトで配信することを検討しているとのことです。

最後の４月号はコムデギャルソンの特集。また、３月に「ハイファッションに見るファッションの50年」展が開催されます。写真や記事を通してハイファッションとファッションの50年間の歴史を辿ります。

PINKYなど、最近国内外で雑誌や新聞の休刊が目立っていますね。インターネットからたくさんの情報が得られるなか、雑誌を買う人は減っています。でも、大好きな雑誌を本屋さんに買いに行ったり、雑誌をパラパラめくったりするのは私にとって幸せな時間です。欲しい雑誌を全て買うのは難しいけど、インターネットは決して雑誌のかわりにはならないと思います。皆様はどう思われますか？ぜひ意見や感想など聞かせてください！

I was totally blown away when I went to see the exhibit "Element", a collection of works by structural engineer Cecil Balmond.

週末にオペラシティーアートギャラリーで開催されている展示「エレメント」構造デザイナーセシル・バルモンドの世界を見に行ってきました！

Born in Sri Lanka, Cecil Balmond is described as one of the most daring and innovative architects today.

スリランカ生まれのセシル・バルモンドは冒険的、革新的なで建築家として知られており、数々のプロジェクトに関わってきました。

This exhibit features pieces that are inspired by the nature around us. Balmond focuses on not only the outer beauty but the order and rhythm hidden beneath each object, and develops that into geometry. I admit that sounds pretty confusing and as math and sciences are not exactly my favorite subjects, it was hard to understand all the meaning put into each piece. Nonetheless it was inspiring to see the way Balmond thinks and how so much can come out of, for example, a single leaf.

バルモンド氏の作品の発想の起源は音楽や数学・数字からきているそうです。今回展示されてあったものも自然の表面の美しさだけではなく“その内側に息づく秩序（オーダー、リズム）を探しだし、それを幾何学へと展開”した作品でどれも奥深く、一つ一つ飲み込んで理解するのが難しかったです。

I really wish I had photographs to show how incredible each of the pieces were, but this is something that should be seen in person! They had little cushions around on the floor so that viewers could relax and really take in the pieces and try to understand the meaning.

残念ながら写真撮影禁止だったので載せられるものがないのですが、この展示は生で見るからこそ魅力的だと思います！床においてあるクッションに座って一日中展示を見ていたかったです。

Today was the distribution day in Tokyo among other cities around the world. The times and places weren't announced until right before the distribution started, but it was the same as last year: Ginza, Daikanyama, and Omotesando.

This year the manifesto was in a paper bag and a tote bag.

今回はトートバッグの他にマニフェストが紙袋に入っていました。

The manifesto this year is really big in size, like a newspaper. I loved the vivid pink background and of course Natalia Vodianova is stunning. I think I'm starting to like the strawberries...

今年のマニフェストは新聞ほどの大きさでした。背景が色鮮やかなピンクがいつものサンローランとちょっと違った印象で、いちごにも愛着が湧いてきます。ナタリアも素敵！何故かマニフェストのサイトが見えなくなっちゃってますが（私だけ？）ムービーなどまた見ないとです！

I am again so far behind on watching the collections, but I really love Preen this season. The way the turtlenecks were incorporated is really fresh and original, and I'm excited to see how it works into the A/W 2010 trend. One of my favorites is the dress on the right. The contrast of the delicate fabric on the center of the dress and the strong shoulders with the turtleneck is striking. Oh and I would love to own one of the floral bustiers...!

ニューヨークファッションウィーク始まりましたね！まだ全然見ていないんですが、今のところ好きなのはPreen。特にタートルネックの着こなしが新鮮で、秋冬のトレンドにどう影響するか楽しみです。コレクションの中でもお気に入りが右のドレス。中心部分の繊細な素材とタートルネック・肩の強いラインのコントラストがとても印象に残ります。

Valentine's Day takes on a whole new meaning in Japan. It's celebrated quite differently from other countries--it's the girl giving candy/presents to the boy. On Valentine's Day, it's a tradition to give the person she likes some kind of handmade sweets. The boy returns the gift on White Day on March 14, which is like another Valentine's Day but reversed. It is a huge deal here, I think it's the biggest event after Christmas.

Another tradition is tomo-choco, where valentines are exchanged with friends. This is mostly girls giving each other chocolate or what not, so I think every girl comes home with at least 10 handmade sweets on Valentine's Day.

Whoever the valentine is for, a lot of Japanese girls work very hard for this day. I went to a store called LOFT today, and it was absolute chaos.

今年はバレンタインがいつもより早くやってくる気がします。個人的にはまだ一ヶ月くらい先な気がしちゃうんですが、もう明日ですね。今日ロフトに行ってやっと気付きました。すごかったです、女の子たち！みんな一生懸命。海外ではホワイトデーもないし、日本のバレンタインはかなり特殊ですよね。

NORITAKA TATEHANA is a Tokyo based designer, and this collection consists of his handmade dresses, handbags, and shoes. His skyscraping shoes like the one above were especially incredible.

Hotel Gluttony is a "lifestyle brand that images styles of people who gather at [the] fictional 'Hotel Gluttony'". Pieces from Hotel Gluttony might look familiar, as Lady Gaga has worn it for a Vogue Hommes Japan editorial.

NORITAKA TATEHANAは東京を拠点とするデザイナー。このコレクションは手作りのドレス、ハンドバッグ、靴などがあります。特に上の写真のような靴がとても印象的でした。

Hotel Gluttony（ホテル・グラトニー）は”架空のホテルに集う人々のスタイルをイメージしたライフスタイルブランド”。あのLady GagaがVogue Hommes Japanのエディトリアルで着用したブランドです。

The exhibit itself is small, so I recommend eating there too (combine Daikanyama is a restaurant/bar with an exhibit space). They had a whole list of desserts that I would love to try.

展示自体は小さいので、そこでお食事もするのがおすすめ（combine Daikanyamaは展示スペールがあるレストラン/バー）。食べてみたいデザートがいっぱいありました。

It is true that print media is not selling well--popular Japanese magazine PINKY has stopped printing and I'm sure this is the case in a lot of countries. But there's one publisher, Takarajimasha, who is doing very well with their "mooks".

"Mook" is magazine and book put together (I know, great naming) and the recent ones feature a magazine and a supplement. There are so many different kinds of mooks today--Marc by Marc Jacobs, YSL (cosmetics), SEE BY CHLOE, Vivienne Westwood, A BATHING APE...the list is endless. A typical magazine inside a mook for example, the Marc by Marc Jacobs one, consists of the full collection, a look at the individual pieces, an editorial, and more. The supplement is almost always surprisingly well made, and I use my Marc by Marc tote almost every day. All this, and the price is under about 20 dollars.

雑誌が売れない中、非常に人気があるのがムック本。最近は人気のマーク BY マークジェイコブス、SEE BY CHLOE、イヴ・サンローランなど、ブランドのファンにはたまらにものがぞくぞくと販売されています。日本の付録は高品質だし、もちろん雑誌の部分も読み応えたっぷりでその上お手軽な値段。しかも外国では雑誌に付録がつくのは少なく、日本限定のものが手に入ったりします。特にマーク BY マークジェイコブスなど、海外でも人気のブランドの付録を海外で持ち歩いているとうらやましがられる、なんて話も聞いたことがあります。

こんなにメジャーな海外ブランドがムック本になるのはちょっと抵抗があったけど、安さと可愛さに負けなんだかんだいって購入してます。そんなムック本の最新がこちら、３月３日発売のマーク BY マークジェイコブス２０１０年S/Sコレクション。

The supplements this time consists of a make-up bag, a handkerchief, and a mirror. All this for under about 15 dollars sounds pretty good to me...and I've been pleased with the past mooks so I'm considering buying this one too. What do you think about mooks? Would you buy it?

Seeing Double

Today I indulged myself with two magazines, InRed and SO-EN (my favorite). Musician Sheena Ringo is on the cover of InRed and singer Kaela Kimura is on the cover of SO-EN. Now I think we all know that stripes are going to be everywhere this S/S season, and unique trousers have been popular too.

今日はちょっと贅沢して２冊同時にお買い上げ。大好きな装苑と大好きな椎名林檎が表紙のInRed。今年の春夏シーゾンは引き続きおしゃれなズボンやアレクサンダーワングのランウェイでも見かけたボーダが流行りですね。

But even so, I was surprised to see practically the same styling on the cover of the two magazines! The striped shirt and accessories are quite different, but the jeans are from the same brand, FACETASM.

それにしても、ほぼ同じスタイリングになるとは...！ボーダーの太さやアクセサリーは違うけど、ズボンは両方ファセッタズムのもの。かぶるものですね。

Sheena Ringo is older than Kaela Kimura, thus the more simple and polished style with heels. The younger Kaela Kimura's styling is more fun and playful, with big ribbons, necklaces, and star-print shoes. I think the styling fits their personality and age, but which do you prefer?

林檎ちゃんはやっぱりシンプルに、そしてヒールを履くことによって大人っぽくまとめていますね。カエラちゃんは大きなリボンやじゃらじゃらネックレス、星の柄の靴で遊び心たっぷりのコーデです。両方とも個性や年齢にあっているなぁ、と思うけど皆様はどっちの方が好き？個人的に林檎ちゃんのヘッドピースをした姿も見てみたいです。何でも似合っちゃうので。

Today I went to see G-tokyo 2010, an art fair consisting of 15 galleries at Mori Art Center Gallery in Roppongi Hills.

今日は１５のギャラリーが参加しているアートフェア、G-tokyo 2010を見に行ってきました。六本木ヒルズの森アーツセンターギャラリーにて。

According to the official website, this art fair aims to rethink what really makes art special, what it means to live with art and purchase art. Because art is accessible to many of us today, maybe now is the time to reconsider the true essence of art.

オフィシャルサイトによると、このフェアは何故アートは特別なものであり、アートと生活しアートを購入する意味を問い直すものだそうです。アートが私たちにとって身近となった今、アートの核心に触れることが少なくなっているのかもしれません。

I used to live in Yokohama, and it's a place that I still love and visit. It's only a train ride away but I feel that the atmosphere is totally different.

横浜、すごく好きです。東京と近いのに、なんだか雰囲気が違って穏やかな気持ちになれる。東京はもちろん好きだけど以前住んでいたせいか、横浜にも愛着があります。

The Chinatown in Yokohama is the largest in East Asia. Chinatown is always fun to visit, with good food and interesting things.

まずは中華街。平日なのに関わらず、賑わっていました。

I had a rice ball covered with sesame filled with sweet bean paste here. The outside is fried and crispy, while the inside is chewy and soft. Oh and notice how cute the steamed meat buns are!

ここで胡麻団子を。小腹が減ったときにちょこっと食べられる、いいサイズ。豚まんは食べるのがもったいないほど可愛くて。というかパンダまんもありますね！めずらしい。

After a quick stroll through Chinatown, I headed to a small gallery where my friend was exhibiting her flower arrangement and jewelry.

中華街をぶらっとしたあと、元町の小さなギャラリーで友達のフラワーアレンジメントの展示を見に。

The Japanese-inspired arrangements (above) were my favorite.

日本風のアレンジが素敵。

On the way home, I stumbled upon a vintage store, Chingle Bell.

そして、帰り際たまたま見つけた古着屋さん、チングルベル。

This small two-story store was filled with amazing clothes, full of variety.

小さな２階建てのお店。

I find myself overwhelmed when vintage/thrift stores are too big, like Kinji. Maybe it's because I don't have the patience to search through every rack...but Chingle Bell is very compact, like a cozy attic full of crazy clothes and accessories. The storekeepers were incredibly nice, too. The clothes are all in pristine condition, and this is because after buying the clothes in Europe, the US, and Japan, they check all the pieces for damage, have it dry cleaned, and iron it themselves. I could really see that the clothes here got the special care needed, and the storekeeper's feelings towards fashion and vintage clothes was genuine. I left with a vintage dress from Europe and a tunic from the 50s, in excellent condition, at a great price. If you're ever around this area, I highly recommend stopping by!

大きい古着屋さんだと割と欲しいものが見つからなく、ただ疲れて終わってしまうことが多いのですが、ほどよく小さいチングルベルはそんな私にぴったりでした。店員さんもとても親切で素敵な方で。ヨーロッパ・アメリカ・日本などの古着をセレクトし、汚れやダメージを確認したあと、クリーニングに出したりアイロンかけたり。愛情がいっぱいこもってて古着とは思えないほどキレイな洋服たち。いつも古着屋さんで上手く行かない私でも、ヨーロッパのドレスと５０年代のチュニックを買いました。チングルベル、おすすめです。ぜひ立ち寄ってみてください。

Sailing the Seven Seas

I'm sure many of you grew up watching Disney films and loved going to the theme parks. I hadn't seen a Disney film or been to a theme park for a while, but when I went yesterday, I was totally taken away by the beauty of Disney's image and felt enchanted, seriously. These are from DisneySea (Disneyland is the other park of Tokyo Disney Resort) and I hope they bring back memories of Disney's magic from when you were a little child...

昨日久しぶりにディズニーシーに行ってきました。最近はだいぶディズニーから遠のいてたのですが、改めて行ってみるとディズニーの世界観に完全に魅せられ、幼い女の子みたいにはしゃいでいました。

DisneySea as you can probably guess has a nautical exploration theme and there are seven "ports of call".

One of the best parts about DisneySea is that the food is delicious! There's a huge variety--Chinese, Italian, Indian, Mexican, and not to mention the many snack stations selling popcorn, churros, dim sum, cookies...the list is endless!

ディズニーシーの食べ物は種類も豊富で美味しいから毎回グルメツアーになってます。特におすすめなのはアラビアンコースで買える黒ごまのチュロス。ポップコーンは新しいミルクティー味が発売されていて、行列ができていました。

For lunch I split the Mexican style paella and tacos.

お昼にはパエリアとソフトタコス。

You'll see lots of people wearing Mickey ears. There's lots of different kinds, like a wedding Minnie or Genie ears. They even had a studded Mickey ear! I love how girls coordinate their Mickey ears with their outfits.

最近はカチューシャや帽子の種類が多くて何個も欲しくなっちゃいます。その日のコーディネートをカチューシャとあわせてたり、友達とおそろいのをしてる方も多くて可愛いです。

On the 2nd floor is the Trading Museum COMME des GARCONS. The shirts and bags in the photograph is from the collaboration with the Beatles, and they also have the BLACK line.

２階にはTrading Museum COMME des GARCONS。この写真に写っているシャツとバッグはビートルズとのコラボのもの。BLACKのラインのものも置いてあります。

...and the yummy bakery I mentioned before. They had the best baguette I've ever had! There's some tables, so stop by if you're tired from walking all over Omotesando and Harajuku.

...そして前にも書いた美味しいパン屋さん。ここのバゲットは最高に美味しいです！テーブルもあるので、歩き疲れたらここで一休みを。

Once you're sitting at the table, look up and admire the lovely architecture!

The title reads, "Find the 'world standard' Japanese Brand! 95 brands to take note of". I've recently read an interesting article I found on Style Bubble from the New York Times. It points out that most Japanese fashion brands, even the popular and critically acclaimed brands are little known overseas, despite the increasing popularity of Japanese street style. Even though I live in Tokyo, I feel like there's a distance between Japanese fashion brands and consumers, especially the ones that are expensive.

写真通りですが”世界基準のジャパニーズブランドを探せ！！注目の９５ブランドはこれだ”ー日本のブランドの大特集です。そして最近ニューヨークタイムズで面白い記事を読みました。日本のスナップは海外でもよく知られていてるのとは逆に、国内で人気・評価の高いブランドでも日本以外では無名、というケースがほとんど。東京に住んでいる私でさえ日本のブランド（特に高めのもの）とは若干距離を感じます。

The magazine reads, "Find the 'world standard' Japanese Brand", I think Japanese brands have reached that (whatever they mean by "world standard"...). One thing that Japanese brands must do is take more advantage of the Internet. Japan is way behind when it comes to using the Internet to communicate. Twitter is slowly catching on (on a completely random and unrelated note, can you believe that the Prime Minister of Japan is on Twitter?!), but it hasn't been a huge movement like it was in the States, and online shopping is still a relatively new concept; no one around me shops online. I find it hard to find official sites, lookbooks, and overall information about Japanese brands online. Has anyone felt this too? I would love to hear your opinion--do you wish that more Japanese brands would expand overseas, are you interested in what kind of stores/brands are popular in Japan, do you have a favorite Japanese brand? Let me know what you think!

雑誌には”世界基準のジャパニーズブランドを探せ！！”とありますが、日本のブランドはその基準（というか世界基準とはどんな基準なんでしょうか...）まできていると思います。ただ日本のブランドはインターネットをフル活用してないと思います。Twitterも最近根付いてきたばかりだし（鳩山総理がTwitter使っているなんてびっくり！）、オンラインショッピングも結構新しいですよね。少なくとも私の周りには洋服や靴をインターネットで買う人はいません。インターネットを使ってコミュニケーションをとる、と行った面では完全に遅れています。ブランドのオフィシャルサイト、ルックブック、情報なども見つけにくい気がするし、あまりオープンではない気がします。皆様はどう思われますか？日本のブランドはもっと海外上陸するべきか、インターネットの使い方、ブランドの広報とか何でも！ぜひぜひ、皆様の意見をお聞きしたいです。お気軽にコメントでどうぞ！

One of my favorite museums right now is the one I recently wrote about, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. It's about 20 minutes away from Shibuya, away from the noise and chaos of the city. It's so pretty inside when the light shines in.

最近よく行くのは、この間の記事にも書いた東京都現代美術館。渋谷から半蔵門線で２０分くらいの静かな住宅街にあるこの美術館。建物も素敵で、なかに入ると、自然な光が差し込んできてて気持ちがいいです。

These white panels are the artwork of Takehiko Inoue, famous for the manga "Slam Dunk". They tell a story, with the huge artwork as the last scene. His artwork is really amazing...the last one you can kind of see in the picture is incredibly intense in real life, with beautiful brushstrokes and really intricate but powerful details.

この白いパネルは、井上雄彦のエントランス・スペースプロジェクト。物語になってて、写真の一番奥に見える巨大な絵が最後の場面(？)。超大きい。写真禁止だったので、ぜひ自分の目で圧倒されちゃってください！ギフトショップの隣に流れている製作中の映像もおすすめ。

There's a restaurant here, but my favorite is the slightly less expensive Cafe Hai. It's a Vietnamese-style cafe, something I feel like there isn't much of here in Japan.

MOTにはレストランもあるけど、お気に入りはちょっと安めのCafe Hai。日本では割と少なめな(気がする)ベトナム料理のカフェです。

This is such a great museum to spend a relaxing day--once it gets warmer, it would be nice to eat outside or roam around the garden and the courtyard.

Select shop BEAMS has teamed up with England's Rockarchive.com for its first exhibit in Japan at EYE OF GYRE in Omotesando. Rockarchive.com sells "limited edition rock and roll photographic prints" and among the photos on display and available for purchase were Madonna, Oasis, Jimi Hendrix, and special edition Courtney Love photographs specially taken for this exhibit.

It's a small exhibit, but a must see for any rock fans out there!

By the way, GYRE is a really stylish building that has Chanel, Bvlgari, Maison Martin Margiela, COMME des GARCONS Play Box and the MOMA Store all under one roof. It also has a really yummy bakery, restaurants, tea store and the building itself is pretty amazing--more pictures coming soon!

イギリスのロックアーカイブがセレクトショップBEAMSと日本での初めての展示と販売が今表参道のEYE OF GYREで開催中。マドンナ、ジミヘン、ビートルズなどたくさんの偉大なミュージシャンなどの写真があって、小さいけど見応えたっぷり！もちろん流れている音楽も最高。展示が終わってもロックアーカイブの写真は原宿のInternational Gallery Beamsで購入可能らしい。

知っている方も多いと思うけど、GYREはキャットストリートの手前にあるめちゃくちゃお洒落なビル。シャネル、ブルガリ、メゾンマルテンマルジェラ、ギャルソンのPlay Boxが揃っています。そして地下には美味しいパン屋さんとか、お茶屋さんとか...ビル自体も素敵だからまた写真アップします！

Luxury and Silence

Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) has some amazing exhibitions going on right now.

The first one, "Luxury in Fashion Reconsidered", explores luxury from the 17th century to today: how luxury and the way people think has changed throughout time. The pieces on display are Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent...to name a few.

東京都現代美術館の特別展示ーファッション好きにはたまりません。

一つは"ラグジュアリー：ファッションの欲望"。

１７世紀の貴族の時代から現在までの服を通して、ファッションのラグジュアリーや人の価値観の変貌を見ることができます。作品はシャネル、ディオール、バレンシアガ、イヴ・サンローランなど...充実したラインアップ。

マルジェラはいっぱい飾ってあって、大満足。

The special exhibit within the "Luxury in Fashion Reconsidered" was the "Kazuyo Sejima Spatial Design for COMME des GARCONS". The other (separate) exhibit was "Rebecca Horn Rebellion in Silence Dialogue between Raven and Whale".

このラグジュアリー展のなかの特別展示が"妹島和代による空間デザイン COMME des GARCONS"。そしてもう一つの別の展示が"レベッカ・ホルン静かな叛乱鴉と鯨の対話"。

Rei Kawakubo and Kazuyo Sejima's creations fit perfectly together. Words aren't enough to express this, so go see it for yourself!

川久保玲さんのお洋服が、妹島さんの独特なクリエーションにつつまれていて...これは自分で体感するのが一番！日本ならではの発想や世界観だと思います。

I don't know too much about modern art, so I didn't know about Rebecca Horn until this exhibit.

It's quite hard to grasp what she's trying to express, but I was totally pulled into her world. I wonder what goes on in her mind, how her pieces are born...it's probably possible to spend days watching her exhibit.

それほどモダンアートに詳しくないから、今回はじめてレベッカ・ホルンを知りました。

衝撃的で...理解できないけど、思わず見入っちゃう。どんなことを考えて、このような作品が生まれたのか、すごく気になる。動く作品や映像もあって、多分１日いても足りないと思う。もう一回見に行きたい。

Next to the Rebecca Horn exhibit was "Swedish Fashion--Exploring a new Identity", a collection of clothes designed by Swedish designers.

レベッカ・ホルンの展示の隣にあったのが、"スウェーディッシュファッション−新しいアイデンティティを求めて"という、スウェーデンのデザイナーの展示。

With H&M a big success in Japan, I think Japanese people are more interested in Sweden and Swedish culture. There was a lot of variety--knits, architectural jackets to name some.

今年はH&Mがオープンしたり、スウェーデンに興味を持った方も多いのではないかな。ニットや立体的なジャケットなど、ヴァラエティ豊で楽しめました。

All of the exhibits are really worth seeing. The museum was surprisingly not very crowded, so you can really take your time and look all you want.

本当に見応えたっぷりな展示ばかりです。この間のメアリー・ブレア展みたいに混んでいなかったので（日本人はやっぱりディズニー好き！）ゆっくり見れるはず。

With the illuminations in Omotesando returning after 11 years, the city has instantly increased more glamour in the streets. Standing out among all the glittering lights is Dior, illuminated in red lights. Christian Dior has always valued color, and at Dior Omotesando, events featuring "rouge" are going to be held until December 26.

11年ぶりにケヤキ並木のイルミネーションが復活して賑わいをみせてる表参道。

そのなかでも真っ赤なルージュに染まったディオールの建物は一際目を引く。

クリスマスシーズン中、ディオール表参道でルージュをテーマにしたイベントを開催！

クリスチャン・ディオールは、色彩を大切にしていて、そのなかの９色を最も重要としていたらしい。この秋冬では、その９色のなかのルージュをピックアップしていて、ルージュに関わる様々なイベントが行われている。

そのイベントの一つは建物のイルミネーション。少し離れたビルの上から見ても目に止まるこのイルミネーションは、いつもの真っ白で透明感のあるディオールとまた違った雰囲気。

On the fourth floor is the Haute Couture Exhibition. Though it's a small exhibition with 12 dresses, dresses designed by Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and John Galliano show the history of the fashion house.

４Fではオートクチュールの展示。ルージュをテーマにしたドレス１２着が展示されている。ディオールの作品はもちろん、ジョン・ガリアーノ、サンローランのデザインもあって、小さいながらもディオールの歴史が見れる。

The main dress, without question, is this 2004/05 Autumn Winter Dress by John Galliano:

今回の展示の華は、なんと言っても2004/05秋冬のジョン・ガリアーノのこのドレス。

大迫力！言うまでもないけど生地の色鮮やかさ、ドレープ、そしてファイン・ジュエリー...何時間でも眺めていられそう。そして、これを着たモデルさんはいったいどうやって歩いたのか?!と思ってしまいます。

On the third floor is the Dior Studio, where a professional make-up artist will create a look using the Dior rouge lipstick. This actually turned out to be a full make-up session starting with foundation all the way to mascara. The make-up artist was amazing, and after the make-up, you can get your photo taken holding a Dior bag. This event is only held on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays until December 26, so if you have the chance, go! Getting make-up done for free at Dior is rare and a great experience.

３Fのディオールスタジオでは、プロのメイクアップアーティストがルージュをポイントにしたメイクを体験できます。ルージュだけだと思ったら、化粧水からアイメイクまでして下さいました！本当に丁寧にメイクして頂いて。ディオールで、しかも無料でメイクしてもらえるチャンスって、この先も少ないと思うから...期間が１２月２６日までの金土日・祝日と迫ってるけど、機会があるなら本当におすすめします。

メイクの後はディオールの鞄をもって写真撮影ができます。ちなみに、出来上がりはイベント終了後の２７日以降らしい。

Unfortunately buying anything Dior is far far away for me...but these events are a nice way to get to know the brand a little more and to feel it and see it yourself.

本当に素敵な体験ができて、ずっとにやにやしていたくらいでした。たとえディオールのものが今買えなくても、こういうイベントでブランドを少しでも身近に感じられることって、すごく素敵ですよね。

What makes Tokyo so different from other cities?

The perspective, atmosphere, the way things are incorporated--

Tokyo Identity is just a place to share the little things I find in this city
